In the 1930s & 40s tractors were still a rare sight on Irish farms. Only the more prosperous farmers could afford two heavy horses to assist with the farm work. Some of the less well off farmers could however afford donkeys which were plentlyful at the time and much cheaper to feed. This pair of male donkeys would have been capable of ploughing an acre of ground in two days, about half of what the two horses could have done.
